Indian Railways to Replace 40-Year-Old Reservation System With Smart Technology

Indian Railways is planning a major transformation in its ticket booking system by replacing the 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a new smart and modern platform. The upgraded system is expected to make ticket booking faster, improve refund processing, reduce server pressure, and provide a smoother booking experience for passengers across the country.

Rollout of the New Smart PRS System

The current PRS system has been in operation since 1986. Although several updates have been introduced over the years, including online ticket booking in 2002, the increasing number of railway users has created the need for a more advanced and efficient reservation system.

Faster Ticket Booking and Better Server Performance

According to railway officials, the new reservation system will be introduced in phases starting from August. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials to ensure that railway ticketing services continue without interruption during the transition period.

The upgraded system will use Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart prediction technology, and high-speed booking features. Indian Railways believes this modernization will improve the overall passenger booking experience and support the growing demand for online ticket reservations.

Faster Ticket Booking and Better Server Performance

One of the biggest improvements in the new system will be its booking capacity. Indian Railways aims to process around 2.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. At the same time, more than 4 lakh users are expected to log in simultaneously without facing major server issues.

This upgrade can significantly reduce slow loading problems and website crashes, especially during Tatkal booking hours and festive travel seasons when traffic on railway booking platforms increases heavily.

AI-Based Waiting List Prediction

The railway’s new smart reservation system will also improve waiting list confirmation predictions. Earlier, the prediction accuracy was around 53%, but with the use of AI and data analytics, the railway claims the accuracy may increase up to 94%.

Faster Refunds After Ticket Cancellation

At present, passengers often wait between two to seven days to receive refunds after cancelling train tickets. Under the new PRS system, payment gateways will be better integrated with railway services, allowing the refund process to begin almost instantly after ticket cancellation.

This improvement is expected to make the cancellation and refund process more convenient for passengers who frequently travel by train.

Rail-One App Becoming More Popular

The Rail-One app is also playing an important role in the railway’s digital expansion. The app has already crossed 3.5 crore downloads and currently handles around 9.29 lakh ticket bookings daily.

Reports suggest that nearly 88% of railway tickets are now booked online, showing how quickly passengers are shifting toward digital railway services.

Indian Railways Moving Toward a Smarter Future

Indian Railways is also planning to introduce “virtual stations” in the new reservation system. This feature can help passengers book tickets more easily between smaller stations where trains stop but ticket availability often remains limited.

The initiative may improve connectivity for passengers travelling from less crowded railway stations and smaller towns.

Order Food in Train During Your Journey

The modernization of the railway reservation system reflects Indian Railways’ focus on improving passenger convenience through better technology and faster services. The railway sector also continues to receive strong government support, with an estimated subsidy of ₹60,239 crore for 2024-25, offering passengers an average fare concession of around 43%.

With AI-powered technology, quicker booking, faster refunds, and improved digital infrastructure, Indian Railways is moving toward a smarter and more passenger-friendly future.

Along with faster ticket booking and modern railway services, passengers can also make their journey more comfortable by ordering food online in trains. Platforms like Rajbhog Khana allow travellers to order fresh and hygienic meals directly to their seats at multiple railway stations across India. From North Indian meals to snacks and beverages, passengers can enjoy restaurant-style food while travelling comfortably by train.
