Indian Railways has introduced a major update to its ticket cancellation policy in 2026, making last-minute cancellations more costly for passengers. The revised rules aim to reduce misuse of bookings and improve seat availability for genuine travelers. If you frequently travel by train, understanding these changes is essential.
The biggest change is simple but strict: Passengers who cancel their confirmed tickets less than 8 hours before the train’s departure
Earlier, passengers could still get partial refunds closer to departure time. Now, this window has been extended, making the policy more rigid.
The revised cancellation rules are now based on a clear time-based structure:
1.) More than 72 hours before departure
→ Maximum refund with a minimal cancellation charge
2.) Between 72 hours and 24 hours
→ Around 25% of the fare is deducted
3.) Between 24 hours and 8 hours
→ Around 50% of the fare is deducted
4.) Less than 8 hours before departure
→ No refund allowed
This structured approach clearly shows that delaying cancellation increases financial loss.
The decision is not random. Indian Railways has been dealing with issues like:
• Last-minute cancellations leading to vacant seats
• Ticket blocking by agents or touts
• Long waiting lists not getting cleared
According to official insights, stricter rules will help prevent misuse where tickets were booked in bulk and cancelled later, allowing fair access to genuine passengers.
Along with refund changes, Railways has introduced a helpful feature. Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure, offering more flexibility in cities with multiple stations.
Previously:
• Partial refunds were allowed even up to 4 hours before departure
• The no-refund condition applied much later
Now, the cutoff has been extended to 8 hours, doubling the strict window and making early decision-making more important.
Despite stricter rules, some situations still allow refunds:
• If the train is cancelled
• If the train is delayed significantly (over 3 hours) with proper claim
• If the ticket remains waitlisted and is not confirmed
These exceptions ensure passengers are protected in unavoidable situations.
This update clearly pushes passengers toward better travel planning. Since cancelling at the last moment can result in losing the entire ticket fare, travelers should finalize their plans early.
